The Transcendence of God - by Kannan Luke

“In the beginning God created heaven and earth, but the earth was so dark, so he created light and separated light from the darkness. On the second day, he only created the sky. On the third day, he gathered all the water and put it someplace else and formed the land, he also created plants and trees on the land. On day 4, he created the sun, moon, stars and other such stuffs. Day 5, he created all the living creatures in the sea, and all the creatures that could fly. And finally, on day 6, he created all the living animals (including us humans).”
 This must be the first ever recorded occurring of God in the history. But where was this God before that? Nobody seems to know. Where has he gone after that? Nobody knows that either. But there is an alternate story! It goes like this, Earth was formed through the process accretion. Due to the hotter surface back then, it took periods of volcanic outgassing to form the primordial atmosphere. Through time, earth cooled down, allowing water to exist on its surface, which subsequently helped form life in water. Gradually life expanded out of water and into plants and then animals. And later into humans. Which finally led into conceiving the “God”. Sure, for a conservative it is going to seem a little complicated. But don’t you think life is ought to be a little complicated?
God is a creation of man, and not the other way around. Probably in the medieval times, some wise man saw into the future and thought that an illusionary power like god would be a good morale for the human mind. Because, I refuse to believe that we always had this natural tendency for wanting to be ruled over or necessity to have a superior figure over us all the time. I think such human notions are the outcome of our species’ centuries of worshipping God. Although, I cannot completely be critical towards it, the creation of such a force. Because, if such an invention never happened, I don’t think our life would have been this disciplined or as civilized as it is right now. So, I believe, in a sense, it must have benefited us a lot in the process of shaping up the human behaviors (or so in the beginning). Through time, the theory of god expanded, now it’s almost impossible to figure out If there was indeed a god, and if so, which one is the real one. Because then, first we would have to decide on whether there is only one god or if there are numerous ones, if it is just one god, then the next question would be which one? And if there are numerous gods, how many? And finally, all will be concluded with, could it all just be the same?
By the time civilization has really happened, there probably were millions of stories regarding the origin and other such mysteries. While some of the stories survived the conflicts between the others, some went extinct. Even though the stories got lesser as the horde expanded, people got more committed in their beliefs.
I think defining God is one’s carte blanche. But by normal definition- God is omnipotent, the begetter and the ruler of the universe. But what if God is only your knowledge and Devil your intuitions?
According to bible, Satan represents our negative thoughts. In that sense, God is our positive thoughts. Considering that, we can safely conclude our thoughts are what actually supreme of all. It is supported in the Hindu scriptures too, according to the Vedas, ‘Paramathma’, which is the higher power of all is not a person nor have any physical forms, but is a state of consciousness.  Whether these texts are authentic or not, according to them God is merely our thoughts. Of course, people would interpret it differently. A theist would simply consider it as God controlling our thoughts. But to me it doesn’t make any sense, as the God isn’t doing anything to stop the catastrophes, then it would mean he is either not omnipotent or he is just pure evil. If he is neither, he doesn’t exist.
The God is like a drug. While it has been an effective resistance towards many of our psychological problems, it has some side effects too. God is a great motivator, maybe even the best in the world. If you think about it, God is the second greatest medicine (love is the first) for hopeless, desperate and the weak people. But I would say its side effects are more severe, the God will start impeding your thought process the moment you give in. And since the God can only feed you with his/her (its?) truth and does not want you to think, it is only going to make you naรฏve.   
In conclusion, if there is indeed a God, without any doubt my life would be much easier. But until then, when a theist yearns for the kindness of his lord, I will simply depend on the randomness of the universe. The only difference there is going to be is that I won’t be disappointed at the randomness of the universe.

Importance of Sports and Fitness in Our Lives - by Arjun K

Nowadays, our world is extremely competitive and opportunities are becoming less. But this competitiveness made people think that only studying and getting jobs are essential in our lives. So people are not concerned about their health and thus dangerous diseases like cancer, pneumonia, hypertension etc. are becoming widespread.

We need to understand that life is not all about just making money, instead it’s also essential to manage our daily routine in order to stay physically and mentally fit. For this, we need to start from our school children. Nowadays the parents and the school authorities (especially private management institutions) only encourages the students to study and they discourage the students who have natural aptitude in sports and other extracurricular activities. Another problem is the excess consumption of junk food by the children, which is mainly because the parents are not at all interested in cooking food anymore. Thus, children are just studying and only consuming junk foods like broiler chicken, pizza, burger, soft drinks etc. with no exercise at all. As a result, unwanted hormones start to accumulate in their body and they become fat and unhealthy. So, at this young age itself diseases like cancer, fatty liver, diabetics etc. are affecting them.

 Instead of just taking their children to the doctor for treatment, the parents should also think twice about their attitude and fake concepts towards like. So, in order to develop a healthy society, the parents should first prepare lunch for their children and reduce the consumption of junk foods. Then they should encourage children to participate in sports and other extracurricular activities. The government should also make sure that the schools are engaging their students in physical activities for at least one hour a day. Learning martials arts in also good for maintaining flexibility and health.

While giving physical fitness, sports and games also improves our leadership qualities, mutual understanding and coordination. For eg: During world war, the British encouraged their child warriors to play team games like cricket and football for improving their leadership qualities, coordination and team work. They believed that it would help the children to succeed in the future.

While doing exercise we need to understand that fitness is not at all about gaining muscles, but it’s about losing unwanted fat from our body in order to be physically and mentally strong.

For physical fitness, we need to concentrate more on the exercises that can easily burn fat like running and the exercises that can strengthen the entire core of our body like pull ups and planks. It is also important that we should exercise weekly. Otherwise, it would lead to negative gains like body pains, cramps etc. While doing running, you should not run at a slow speed all the time, instead do short sprints and also run through different routes and different terrains. For doing pullups, you need to make sure your hands would easily balance your full body weight, for this both your hands should be equally powerful. If you are a right hander, you should improve the strength of your left hand by taking weights with left hand and then doing single hand pushups etc. If you are a left hander, vice-versa, thus your body will become perfect for doing pullups. Then do pullups by using 2 rings of a metal stand attached to a wall, while keeping your 2 arms in V-shape. The last one, the plank is the simplest of exercises yet very effective. For doing planks you should either touch your palm and tip of your feet or touch your forearms and tip of your feet on the floor, by keeping your body on a straight line. You need to improve your timings day by day.
                For mental well-being, you need to concentrate more on meditations and yoga. For doing this we should select early morning, especially due to the fresh air. You should practice breathing and laughing exercises. First you need to understand that yoga is not at all about ‘Sheershasana’, so, first you should learn simple exercises. Then slowly go on to a little difficult exercises like ‘Varachyasana’, ‘Kukkudasana’, ‘Ardha Matsyendrasana’, ‘Bhujangasana’ etc. Then only you can try extremely difficult exercises like ‘Sheershasana’. While doing breathing exercises, breath in through one nostril by keeping the other one closed. Laughing exercise is also important as it will relax our mind and improve breathing.

 For a healthy routine,
  1.  Have 7-8 hours of sleep.
  2. Get up early in the morning, around 5 AM is recommended.
  3. Do meditation and yoga.
  4. Do jogging.
  5. 30-45 mins’ exercise.
  6.  Then relax for some time and take a bath.
  7. Only eat a light breakfast.
  8.  Then eat only after the food is completely digested.
  9.  At the evening, enjoy an hour of any sports like football, cricket, badminton etc.
  10.  Then, only eat light at night.
  11. Sleep well and repeat.

Thus, we can develop a physically and mentally fit society.

Untouchability now exists mostly to the extent of gender relations. What is the physical distance a man and woman has to observe in a public society?

People nowadays are more scared of moral policing than anything else. The moral policing is a creation of insanity and violence caused by the sexual frustration. It's the moral policing that led people to believe that they are forbidden of expressing their affection for one another in front of others. Hence, a cultural stereotype was developed, and now women are something men can't even touch or look at in public. Even though the 'new-generation' is trying to overcome this madness, they are still trapped inside the hellhole that moral policing is. This "untouchability" exists in every public space now, for instance, if a young woman is sitting alone on a double seat of a public transport, the male passengers always hesitate to sit next to her. Even if they do, they will be subjected to the intense looks of the other passengers. It is almost same, even if it is the other way around. But the woman will be criticized more.

It's true that even the visionary writer like Changambuzha used to romanticize such moral values. It is actually the communal, and especially the missionaries' political influence instead of the manifestation of art that brought these values upon malayalees.

It was the writers like Kakkanadan, O.V Vijayan, M. Mukundan, M.P Narayanan Pillai, Zachariah etc that brought the sexuality into a much broader canvas. Through expressing a person's internal struggles, they discussed the sexuality very truthfully.

Even though our movie clichรฉs like the dewdrops on the petals of a rose or butterfly kissing the honey of a flower are no longer used to symbolize sex, it still pertains in the minds of certain people. The most common theme of our movies are still love, romance and marriage. A relationship ending with marriage is still the fantasy of a Malayali.

The influence of Victorian morality has caused several problems in our society. Monogamy is one such problem. As we can see in P.K Balakrishnan's 'Kerala History and Caste System', the situation in Kerala before 100 years was different from today. The irony is that, in the same society that fought for the right to cover their breast, young men are getting arrested for wearing low-waist pants.

Unlike ours, other socio-cultural systems are not built upon these physical moralities. Nudity, hugging or kissing doesn't necessarily lead to sex. The perversion of the Malayalis is based upon this existing untouchability. Recent news events only support this argument. The recent moral policing in Marine Drive and University College are perfect examples. At marine drive, it was a shiv sena's women's day celebration. But apparently, they marched in holding a banner saying "stop crime against women" and started chasing away all the couples that were sitting together. Meanwhile the moral policing at University College was done by the members of the so called left liberal organization itself, the very people who are supposedly against it! Both Incidents are pretty ironic when you think about it. Maybe they are not even aware of the fact that their moral policing is based upon this gender based untouchability. I have seen the same people who establishes restrictions between men and women talks about dalit issues.

This cultural injustice is groomed from the school education itself. There are separate schools for boys and girls. Even in Asia's largest school, there are separate buildings for girls and boys. When the school dismisses at the evening, boys and girls are only allowed to leave at different times to avoid even a visual contact. The situation in the schools where the girls and boys are taught together are no different either, a burden of restrictions are implemented on them. According to the so-called educators of our schools, sitting together, eating together or playing together are mishaps that have to be carefully avoided. And If despite of all the obstacles a girl and boy somehow ends up being friends, that would suddenly become the concern for the authorities. The school administration is not understanding how this affects the mental health of the students.

Kerala was a state in which the sexual relationship existed beyond caste boundaries to an extent. These false moralities that we see today were brought in by the foreign invaders. We must acknowledge the importance of Vivekananda who called Kerala a mental asylum, based on the caste boundaries existed here. Even though these moral values, which we borrowed from western culture is not being followed by them anymore, we are still not ready to give it up.

Paneer Butter Masala Recipe By Keerthana Nair

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 tbsp. Oil
  • 1 cup cubed  onions, 3 medium (optional)
  • 1.5 cups finely chopped tomatoes (3 large)
  • salt as needed
  • 10 to 12  cashew nuts
  • 1 tsp.  Coriander powder
  • ½ to ¾ tsp. garam masala powder
  • ½ to ¾ tsp. kashmiri red chilli powder (adjust for best color)
  • ½ tsp.sugar(optional)
  • 1 ½ tbsp.Butter
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 green cardamom
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 2 to 3 cloves
  • 1.5 tsp ginger garlic paste (or ¾ tsp ginger paste)
  • 250 grams paneer (2 heaped cups)
  • ½ tsp. kasuri methi
  • 3 tbsp. cream (for restaurant style)
  • Few coriander for garnishing


PREPARATION
1.      Heat a pan with oil, fry onions until they turn transparent.
2.      Fry tomatoes with salt for 3 minutes.
3.      Cook covered till the mixture turns soft and mushy.
4.      Add garam masala, coriander powder, cashews, red chili powder and sugar if using. Fry until the mix gets roasted well and it should begin to leave the sides of the pan. Switch off the heat
5.      When the mixture cools, blend it with 1 cup water in a blender to very

MAKING PANEER BUTTER MASALA:
1.       1 Add butter to the same pan, add dry spices and fry for one to 2 minutes.
2.       Add ginger garlic paste and saute well until the raw smell disappears.
3.       Pour the blended puree, add red chili powder, if desired ¼ to ½ cup of water. Cook for 4 minutes or until the gravy thickens. Let the gravy reach the desired consistency before you add paneer.
4.       Add paneer kasuri methi. Stir well and cook for 3 minutes. Can add cream if desired.
5.       Transfer butter paneer to a serving bowl and garnish with cream or crushed pepper or coriander leaves.
